September 2017

Dear member,

The poor quality of water at local beaches, and in the Waitemata Harbour generally, has become a major issue for your association. Auckland Council and its CCO Watercare are planning to upgrade failing sewerage infrastructure, some of it almost 100 years old, that is contributing to the problem, but are they doing enough? On our website we explain the background, the concerns, and what we have been doing. This includes the establishment of a coalition of neighbourhood groups (SASOC) affected by contamination from sewage in regular overflows.

We urge you (and all St Mary’s Bay residents) to learn about the problem and the proposed solutions, and to participate in upcoming public consultations. We will let you know details as they become available.

Other current initiatives of the St Mary’s Bay Association include: discussions with the Waitemata Local Board on new planting of trees along St Mary’s Rd; also discussions with Auckland Council on improved Reserve maintenance, especially on the cliff face.

The SMBA is keen to increase our sense of community. We will shortly send out notice of a gathering to “get to know your neighbours” over coffee or a glass of wine at a local café. And, of course, the AGM is coming up in November.
